Things to do on a rainy day

Let’s be honest: it’s October, and there are plenty of rainy days coming our way in the next few weeks. And, if you are anything like me, you will probably feel a little unmotivated and a little gloomy on a rainy day. I’m not saying rainy days are bad (I even enjoy them, from time to time), but more often than not they can… cloud your mood. Still with me? Okay.

I made a list (I always make lists for everything) with all the little things you can do so you can lift your spirits a bit, improve your mood and maybe even unwind after a long day at work/school.

1. The Music

First of all, I cannot grasp the concept of a relaxing night routine, or a de-stressing session without some music. It just doesn’t work. Thus, my first tip is to find (or create, but that would take time out of your actual de-stressing session) a playlist with music you can relax to, or music you genuinely enjoy (it could be heavy metal for all I care, but it has to make you feel good and take your mind off from the fact that it’s pouring outside and it’s –most likely- cold and windy, or from any other concerns you might have). For me, any playlist on YouTube which goes on for more than an hour and is centered around Spa music, makes wonders.

2. The Perfume

I’m not talking about your own perfume, I’m talking about the perfume, the olfactory stimulus surrounding you. Whether you like burning incense and having the subtle smoke fill up the room, or you like lighting a scented candle and have that fill up your entire house with its aroma, or you simply like adding a few drops of essential oils to your humidifier, it is scientifically proven that certain smells can trigger certain memories and feelings (read about it here).
So, why not trigger some calming feelings and inviting a cozy feeling into our evening, by lighting a candle or burning some incense?

3. The Visuals

Everyone has a favorite movie, right? Or a favorite series, or a TV show. For me, nothing compares to a Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings movies marathon, but it can (and should) be anything you really enjoy watching. If there is something on your mind which you want to push back for a few hours, until you will be fully prepared to deal with it, watching something on your TV or computer can be the perfect way to take your mind off of things (hey, this is how the term “binge watching” came to life, right?)

4. The Taste

“Chocolate doesn’t ask silly questions. Chocolate understands”. Well, I don’t think I could possibly agree more with this statement. Given the fact that it’s cold outside and that you might be in desperate need of something to warm you on the inside, the best option for rainy days (or nights, or evenings) is hot chocolate. With marshmallows. And sprinkles.
Honestly, nothing compares to taking a whiff of that sweet deliciousness, while being snuggled in your blanket with fuzzy socks and watching your favorite movie. Even writing about it makes my heart feel fluffy :)

5. The feeling

I know we talked about feelings before, but I’m talking about what you are feeling with your skin. With the winter right around the corner (yes, “Winter is coming”), the dropping temperatures can only dry out and strain our skin, especially the one which is most exposed: our face. Therefore, if you wish to give your skin a break and take care of it, at least for one day a week, slap on some highly hydrating moisturizer or a deep-hydrating face mask. You can keep the mask on while you are watching your movie (I know I do, and it does wonders for my skin) or while you are soaking in a bathtub for hours. A little care goes a long way.

If there is anything I might have left out of this list, or if there are any other ways you relax on a rainy day, let me know :)
